Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica; its water content may range from 3 to 21% by weight but is usually between 6 and 10%. Because of its amorphous character, it is classed as a mineraloid, unlike crystalline forms of silica, which are classed as minerals.

Opal is found in colors such as Colorless, white, yellow, red, orange, green, brown, black, blue, pink. Opal hardness is 5.5–6 hardness according to the Mohs scale with 2.15 Specific gravity. Opal is a Single refractive gemstone, often anomalous double refractive due to strain. Precious opal displays play-of-color (iridescence), common opal does not show the play of color. these two things are broad classes of opal.
