About Hyacinth Gemstones

Hyacinth is not a separate gemstone species but a historic trade name for natural zircon, specifically red, orange, and brownish-red zircon varieties. Zircon is a zirconium silicate mineral known for its high refractive index and excellent dispersion.

With a hardness of 6–7.5 on the Mohs scale, hyacinth zircon is suitable for fine jewelry when set with care. Some stones may be heat-treated to adjust or enhance color, a standard and stable practice that should always be disclosed.

Major sources of hyacinth zircon include Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Madagascar. Natural stones with strong red or orange tones are increasingly rare and highly valued.
