Star Sapphire
Star Sapphire
Star Sapphire is a rare and captivating variety of sapphire that displays a natural asterism, forming a luminous star that appears to glide across the surface of the stone under a single light source. Most star sapphires show a six-rayed star, while exceptional stones may display a twelve-rayed star.
As a member of the corundum family, star sapphire has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, making it highly durable and suitable for fine jewelry. These gemstones are typically cut as cabochons to best reveal the star effect and are prized for rings, pendants, and collector pieces.
This category features carefully selected star sapphires chosen for sharp star definition, symmetry, translucency, and natural beauty.

Star Sapphire
Nature’s star captured in sapphire.
About Star Sapphire Gemstones
The star effect in sapphire is caused by fine, needle-like inclusions of rutile aligned within the crystal. When properly cut, these inclusions reflect light to form a distinct star pattern on the surface.
Star sapphires occur in a variety of colors, including blue, black, gray, pink, and white. Important sources include Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Myanmar, Thailand, Madagascar, and India. Some star sapphires may be heat-treated; excessive heating can reduce or remove the star, so treatment disclosure is essential.
Natural star sapphires with a centered, sharp star and good translucency are especially valuable.
