About Alexandrite Gemstones

Alexandrite is a color-change variety of chrysoberyl with a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for everyday fine jewelry. The color change is caused by the presence of chromium within the crystal structure, which absorbs light differently under various light sources.

Original alexandrite deposits were discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains, while modern sources include Sri Lanka, Brazil, Tanzania, Madagascar, and India. Natural alexandrite with a strong and distinct color change is extremely rare and valuable.

Some alexandrite gemstones on the market may be laboratory-grown; any such origin should always be clearly disclosed.
