The Padparadscha sapphire is one of the rarest and most sought-after gemstones in the world, known for its delicate blend of pink and orange hues. Unlike traditional blue sapphires, these exceptional stones are found in very few locations, with Sri Lanka being the most renowned source. This heart-shaped Ceylon Padparadscha sapphire is a stunning example of nature’s artistry, transformed by skilled hands into a breathtaking jewel.

From Rough to Brilliance – A Gem’s Journey

This extraordinary gemstone began its journey as an 8-carat facet-grade rough sapphire, mined from the famous gem-producing region of Nivithigala, Sri Lanka. Measuring 12 x 12.5 x 6.5 mm in its raw form, the stone already displayed a promising glow even before cutting.

At Danu Group, we take great care in sourcing, cutting, and polishing each gem with the utmost precision. This rough was purchased directly from the miners, ensuring its authenticity and quality. The gemstone’s transformation was led by Danu Group’s owner, Mr. Danu, who personally preformed the stone before passing it to Mr. Rumesh, a heart shape cutting expert, to bring out its final brilliance.

Cutting Padparadscha sapphires requires extreme skill due to their delicate color balance and natural inclusions. After an expert-level cutting and polishing process, the rough was shaped into a 4.25-carat heart with final dimensions of 11.46 x 9.61 x 5.20 mm.

This Padparadscha sapphire retains a VS clarity grade, meaning it has only a minor feather inclusion, which is common in these rare sapphires. Due to its rarity, it was not worth sacrificing significant weight to remove inclusions that do not affect its beauty. Instead, the cutter skillfully preserved the stone’s best qualities, ensuring its brilliance and unique color remained intact.

Why Padparadscha Sapphires Are So Rare

Padparadscha sapphires stand apart from other sapphires due to their sunset-like pink-orange hues, which are a result of a precise balance of iron and chromium in their composition. Finding a naturally occurring, unheated Padparadscha with a vibrant and balanced color is exceptionally difficult.

Sri Lanka, particularly Nivithigala and the surrounding Ratnapura district, is home to some of the world’s finest Padparadscha sapphires. These gems are often compared to the colors of a lotus flower or the glow of a tropical sunrise, making them a cherished choice for collectors and jewelry enthusiasts.

Many Padparadscha sapphires in the market undergo heat treatment to enhance their color, but this particular gemstone remains completely natural, preserving its original brilliance. Certified by the Colored Stone Laboratory (CSL), a GIA Alumni Association Member, this gem guarantees authenticity and high-quality standards.
