From 2.50 ct Rough to a 1.18 ct Heart-Shaped Unheated Ceylon Blue Sapphire: A Source-to-Certification Journey
What is a Natural Unheated Blue Sapphire?
A natural unheated blue sapphire is a variety of corundum that has not received heat treatment to improve its color or clarity. These sapphires retain the appearance created entirely by nature, making them highly appreciated by gem collectors, jewelry enthusiasts, and buyers seeking untreated gemstones. Sri Lanka, known worldwide as the Gem Island, continues to produce some of the finest natural blue sapphires from its ancient alluvial deposits.
This beautiful 1.18 ct Natural Unheated Ceylon Blue Sapphire was cut from a 2.50 ct facet-grade alluvial rough sourced from Pelmadulla village around mining in Sri Lanka. Before cutting, the rough displayed an attractive natural blue body color together with a shape that suggested excellent cutting potential.
Many cutters initially believed the orientation of the rough would produce a finished stone close to one carat or slightly below. However, by carefully studying the crystal shape, natural color distribution, and internal structure, our team saw the possibility of preserving more weight while achieving an elegant heart shape. Through careful planning and precision cutting, the finished gemstone weighs 1.18 ct, exceeding the original expectations while maintaining excellent proportions.
The finished gemstone measures 6.47 × 6.15 × 3.94 mm, features a Heart Mixed Cut, displays an attractive natural blue color, and shows VVS clarity, allowing light to move beautifully throughout the stone.
The sapphire remains completely natural and unheated, preserving the characteristics developed naturally over millions of years beneath the earth before being discovered from Sri Lanka’s gem-bearing alluvial gravels.
Following cutting and polishing, the gemstone underwent professional examination by GGTL (Gem Testing Laboratory) using advanced gemological testing, including origin determination and treatment analysis. The laboratory confirmed the gemstone as Natural Corundum – Unheated Blue Sapphire of Sri Lankan (Ceylon) Origin.
The certificate was supervised by experienced gemologists:

Mr. S.A. Saranga Dharmasiri (FGA (UK) Dip. (Gemology), University of Moratuwa, Gemologists’ Association of Sri Lanka, GIA Alumni Member)
